Martin Puryear Response
I find the work of Martin Puryear to be very organic. It seems as though he is embodying natural processes through modern artistic techniques. He seems to employ the use of curves and swooping lines in a graceful and fluid manner. To me, his pieces seem warm, welcoming and earthy. Part of the reason behind this thinking comes from his wooden pieces. They remind me of uncle's log cabin on Mt. Lemon in Arizona. The smooth edges which he ever so skillfully crafts speak of flowing mountain rivers and gorgeous rock valley canyons. His work is Arizona to me and for that, I love it. It speaks of childhood, innocence and sunlight. I imagine that the effect is much different for people who may have different experiences, but for me, it is wonderful.
