Potential "follow" Locations

 In front of Wescoe

Bottom of the hill

Inside the Museum of Natural History

I chose Wescoe Beach as a possible location because that's a place where many people go to hang out throughout the school day. For many people, it is the norm. Others follow their lead, which is why there are so many people on the beach throughout the day. This is a great example of how people "follow" one another.

The bottom of the hill would be a great place for the word because it is the location at the end of the graduation line. Graduating seniors follow each other down the hill at the end of their time at KU.

My favorite location for the word follow is in the Museum of Natural History's evolution section. The idea that humans emerged from lesser life is one of the most amazing discoveries in all of the world's history. Humans emerged because our ancestors, whether by choice or by force, followed the examples of those who were most successful in their environments (survival of the fittest, "natural selection"), hence, the perfect location for the word, "follow."

Letter PDF Reflection

I had never seriously thought about font and typography before I saw the information on this PDF. I found all of these definitions to be very interesting - and sort of surprising. Different styles of typography have always been available to me through word processing applications, so I never really thought about the details of these types. I was obviously aware that they were quite different from one another, but I was never really aware of the fact that there was a whole set of vocabulary just for typography. This PDF was very informative for me.

IDEO Summary

The news report on the company IDEO discusses the way in which this company churns out new designs to other companies in creative and innovative ways. The video opens talking about how it used to be, with people always deferring to the boss, who supposedly had the best ideas. The video then showed that that is not the case. At IDEO, people get together in groups to create or redesign objects for many different companies. Within these groups, people discuss ideas, draw up sketches and try to come up with the best overall concept for a solution to whatever the given problem is. Then they go out into the world and interview people about the problem, trying to figure out the best way to solve it innovatively. Everybody regroups at the IDEO headquarters where they split off into small groups and design different prototypes. After this is done, all of the groups meet together and present their prototypes to each other. They combine forces once again to create the final prototype, which will hopefully be good enough to go into production. This process usually takes about a week. All of the group members are treated as equal and they all work together to come up with the final solution.

These first three images describe the general shape and appearance of the shoe. It shows what most people see upon first glance. Details are used, but not emphasized. The shadows help to show the plane in which the shoe exists. These drawings just describe the shoe as a physical object.

The two above drawings show the shoe in more detail. They are both close up views that describe the shoe's more intimate features. The laces and toe are both shown in more detail. The use of shadows helps to describe the plane of the shoe and the space in which it exists.

Objectified Response

I found the movie Objectified to have a very interesting point of view on the idea of design. The way it showed so many different ideas about how design is constantly applied in everyday life was very refreshing and enlightening. I also liked how so many different people from different areas of design were interviewed. It showed that design affects everybody in almost every way, and no matter what, it will always be one of the fundamental necessities for human survival and happiness.
